From autonomous rovers scouting alien terrain to robotic arms assembling structures in orbit, innovations by agencies and startups are turning science fiction into tangible reality. This feature explores the latest breakthroughs bringing together artificial intelligence and robotic systems for space missions, and how nations and companies are racing to deploy them on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Earthly Innovations Laying the Groundwork

Cutting-edge robotics on Earth are setting the stage for cosmic endeavors. Take NEURA Robotics, for example: the Metzingen, Germany-based startup is Europe’s rising star in humanoid robots, recently attracting $123 million in Series B funding. NEURA’s engineers are integrating unique sensors and AI to create “cognitive” cobots – collaborative robots smart enough to work safely alongside people. Such advancements aren’t happening in isolation. Around the world, investors are pouring capital into robotics ventures, spurred by both commercial promise and the prospects of off-world applications. “Cognitive robotics is expected to become bigger than the smartphone,” NEURA’s founder David Reger boldly declared, underlining the outsized impact this technology could have. He added, “We see a future where robots and humans collaborate seamlessly in every sector.” Global robotics spending topped $80 billion in 2024, reflecting confidence in the fast-growing field.

One doesn’t have to look far to see why confidence is high. At CES 2025, visitors met Nylo, a humanoid service robot developed by California-based IntBot. Dressed in trendy streetwear, Nylo combined a snarky personality with advanced AI motion planning – courtesy of NVIDIA’s powerful robotics platform – to shake hands, chat, and even flirt with onlookers. It was more than a gimmick; Nylo’s fluid movements and autonomous decision-making hinted at the progress in machine learning and kinematics. “Our aim is not to build just a robot, but to craft an experience,” IntBot’s team said, explaining how AI allows Nylo to adapt to dynamic, human-centric environments. The same adaptability and autonomy will be crucial as robots venture into the unpredictable conditions of space. Critically, many of the AI advances in these Earthbound robots – from vision systems to natural language processing – can translate to space exploration. A humanoid like Nylo isn’t destined for space (yet), but the underlying AI that lets it navigate crowds or carry out tasks with minimal supervision is directly relevant to designing spacecraft and rovers that must operate independently of human controllers. Agencies such as NASA and ESA, and companies including SpaceX and iSpace, closely watch the commercial robotics sector, knowing that each breakthrough in AI reasoning or energy-efficient actuators could mean more capable robots on the Moon and Mars. The virtuous cycle is clear: terrestrial tech successes are fueling interplanetary ambitions, and the high-stakes needs of space missions are in turn spurring further innovation back on Earth.

Roving the Red Planet and Beyond

Perseverance Spacecraft

NASA’s Perseverance rover takes an autonomous “selfie” on Mars. AI software on the rover’s PIXL instrument analyzes rock targets in real time, marking the first use of true autonomy in Martian science. On a cold Martian morning in Jezero Crater, NASA’s Perseverance rover carefully zeroes in on a rocky outcrop. Without waiting for instructions from Earth – which would take over 10 minutes each way – Perseverance’s AI software directs a robotic arm to scan the rock’s surface with X-rays. This capability, known as “adaptive sampling,” marks the first time artificial intelligence has been used on Mars to make autonomous science decisions based on real-time data. The rover’s Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) can detect subtle hints of interesting mineral content and decide on the spot to take a closer look. “We use PIXL’s AI to home in on key science,” explains JPL’s Abigail Allwood, principal investigator for the instrument. Without it, scientists would have to sift through initial results and command the rover to rescan later – a slow, iterative process. Thanks to AI, Perseverance can instantly identify a promising vein in the rock and drill a sample for eventual return to Earth, accelerating the hunt for signs of ancient life on Mars. This level of autonomy builds on lessons from earlier missions. NASA’s 2012 Curiosity rover pioneered a simpler AI that allowed it to fire a laser at targets of interest on its own, using image recognition to pick out rocks by shape and color. Perseverance carries that capability and more – including AutoNav, an AI-driven navigation system that lets it drive faster and avoid hazards without constant human guidance. These smarts are essential as we send rovers into more complex terrains. In the coming years, ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover (part of the ExoMars program) is slated to launch in 2028 with an advanced autonomous navigation suite. This six-wheeled robotic explorer will traverse the Martian surface in search of past life, drilling down two meters for samples. With a mission timeline that has no margin for lengthy operator inputs, Rosalind Franklin’s onboard computer must make its own pathfinding decisions to meet science goals. As ESA describes it, the rover is an “autonomous” vehicle able to perceive and react to the Martian environment, a product of Europe’s growing expertise in AI for robotics.

Yutu-2 rover

Meanwhile, on the Moon, robotic pathfinders are multiplying. China’s Yutu-2 rover, part of the Chang’e-4 mission, quietly set a record as the longest-operating lunar rover. Since its historic landing on the Moon’s far side in January 2019, the solar-powered Yutu-2 has spent over four years trundling across the desolate Von Kármán Crater. In that time, it has driven more than 1,300 meters, relaying observations about the far side’s soil and geology. Yutu-2 operates with a high degree of independence – out of necessity. During its two-week-long lunar days it can receive Earth commands, but through the two-week nights it must hibernate and later re-awaken autonomously. Its instruments include a ground-penetrating radar and spectrometers, gathering data that have led to discoveries about the Moon’s subsurface structure and even a quirky “mystery hut” rock formation (which turned out to be an oddly shaped boulder). The rover’s success underscores how robust, semi-autonomous robots are extending human exploration into realms where direct teleoperation is impossible. India, too, joined the lunar rover club in 2023 when its Pragyan rover trundled onto the regolith as part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, making India the fourth nation to achieve a soft Moon landing. Although Pragyan’s mission was brief (one lunar day of operations), its AI navigation system helped it avoid craters and detect soil compositions, demonstrating emerging capabilities from yet another nation.

Sora-Q

Japan’s space agency JAXA has been experimenting with a radically different kind of lunar rover: a baseball-sized transformable robot ball nicknamed “Sora-Q.” Developed in partnership with Sony and toy-maker TOMY, this ultra-lightweight probe folds out to roll on twin wheels. It was designed to hitch a ride on a lunar lander and scout the terrain, collecting data on lunar dust and surface conditions for future missions. Although an initial deployment on a private lander fell through in 2023, JAXA’s concept proved viable in tests and even captured imagery during a recent lunar flyby. Such creative designs hint at the diverse toolkit of robotic explorers coming soon: from heavyweight rovers to swarms of tiny probes, many infused with AI to operate with minimal intervention. The United States is also enlisting private industry to get robots on the Moon. Through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, companies like Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic and Houston’s Intuitive Machines are building robotic landers and rovers to deliver experiments to the lunar surface. Astrobotic’s compact CubeRover vehicles aim to become standardized “lunar drones” that can ferry instruments across the dust and craters. In late 2024, Astrobotic’s larger Peregrine lander is expected to carry a suite of payloads to a lunar plain, marking the first U.S. robotic Moon landing in decades. Japan’s startup iSpace attempted a daring private lunar landing in 2023 with its Hakuto-R Mission 1; despite the lander’s crash, iSpace has further missions planned and spurred interest globally in commercial lunar robotics. The UAE’s Rashid rover, a small AI-powered lunar vehicle, was one such payload on iSpace’s lander – and though it never got to deploy, the international collaboration involved signals a trend: countries are increasingly partnering with both agencies and private firms to get their robotic explorers into space. In all of these efforts, artificial intelligence is the silent partner, enabling rovers to see, decide, and react in distant worlds where human eyes can’t directly observe.

Robotic Partners in Orbit and on the Space Station

Astronaut Sunita Williams interacts with “Astrobee,” a free-flying robotic helper aboard the International Space Station. These cube-shaped drones use AI to autonomously navigate the station, giving crew members a helping hand (or tentacle) in microgravity. Not all space robots roll on wheels – some fly, float, or crawl, and many of the most advanced are already orbiting above us. On the International Space Station (ISS), a trio of cube-shaped robots named Astrobee buzz around the modules like mechanized bumblebees. Each Astrobee unit is a foot-wide cube equipped with cameras, sensors, and small propulsion fans that let it autonomously navigate the station’s interior. NASA designed them as robotic assistants to help astronauts with routine chores, inspections, and science experiments. Much like the helper droids in Star Wars, these free-flyers can take inventory, carry small payloads, and use computer vision to find their way from the U.S. segment to Japan’s Kibo lab. “Robotic helpers will be an integral part of future space exploration,” notes Jonathan Barlow, lead Astrobee engineer, explaining that free-flyers allow crews to focus on complex research while mundane tasks are handled autonomously. Since 2019, Astrobees “Bumble,” “Honey,” and “Queen” have logged over a thousand hours in orbit testing technologies from autonomous docking to zero-G object manipulation. Their AI-driven operating system can work in concert – a glimpse of how swarms of robots might one day maintain spacecraft or habitats far from Earth.

Orbiting robotics aren’t limited to inside the station. The ISS’s exterior is practically a museum of cutting-edge robotic arms. Decades ago, Canada’s original Canadarm on the Space Shuttle showed that human-controlled robots could assemble hardware in microgravity. Today the ISS sports Canadarm2, a larger, AI-enhanced successor that routinely captures visiting cargo vehicles and moves astronauts during spacewalks. There’s also Dextre, a two-armed “robotic handyman” that performs delicate maintenance like swapping out failed electronics – sometimes on its own while operators on Earth supervise. In 2021, the European Robotic Arm (ERA) was added to the Russian segment of the ISS, giving the station yet another semi-autonomous limb capable of moving end-over-end along the exterior. Each of these systems has gradually incorporated more intelligence and autonomy. They can be pre-programmed for certain tasks and use sensors to adjust motions to avoid collisions.

The next leap will come with Canadarm3, slated to be the robotic gatekeeper of NASA’s planned Lunar Gateway station in the 2020s. Unlike the Earth-orbiting ISS, Gateway will only be intermittently crewed, so Canadarm3 must often fend for itself. Engineers at MDA (the Canadian robotics firm behind the project) are designing Canadarm3 to use artificial intelligence for autonomous maintenance and troubleshooting. “Canadarm3 aims to use artificial intelligence for a degree of autonomous maintenance and monitoring at Gateway, which is crucial as the station will only be occasionally staffed,” reports Space.com. The system will actually consist of two arms – a long 8.5-meter main arm and a smaller “dexterous” arm – that can work together to perform complex tasks even when no humans are around. With AI-enabled vision and motion planning, Canadarm3 might inspect the station’s exterior for micrometeorite damage, reposition modules, or even capture inbound spacecraft autonomously. It represents a culmination of Canada’s expertise in orbit robotics, and underscores how vital AI is for managing off-world infrastructure.

Northrop Grumman’s MEV-1

Perhaps the most dramatic display of orbital robotics in recent years was the Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV), a spacecraft designed not to explore, but to repair. In 2020, Northrop Grumman’s MEV-1 made history when it autonomously rendezvoused with an aging communications satellite 36,000 km above Earth and latched on to give it a new lease on life. This was the first ever docking with a satellite that was never meant to be serviced – a delicate operation equivalent to threading a needle at 17,000 km/h. Flying on autopilot, MEV-1 approached the Intelsat-901 satellite using onboard cameras and LiDAR, guided by algorithms instead of a joystick. In a series of cautious maneuvers, it aligned with the drifting Intelsat, inserted a probe into the satellite’s engine nozzle, and locked on. A live feed from space showed Intelsat 901 floating with Earth’s blue marble as the backdrop as MEV-1 inched closer. Once docked, MEV-1 took over propulsion, correcting the orbit and effectively “towing” the satellite to a stable location, extending its operational life by five years. “The automated docking…marked the first link-up of two satellites in geosynchronous orbit,” Spaceflight Now noted in its coverage, calling the images of the feat “spectacular.” This success has spawned a new industry of orbital servicing: Northrop Grumman launched a second MEV and is developing a Mission Robotic Vehicle with robotic arms to install upgrade “kits” on aging satellites. Startup Astroscale, backed by Japan and Europe, is testing AI-guided craft to rendezvous with space debris and de-orbit it safely. These projects rely on machine vision and autonomous guidance – essentially robot brains – to do what human astronauts cannot. The ability for robots to fix and upgrade other robots in space is a force multiplier for future exploration.

Toward Lunar Bases and Martian Outposts

Slated to land at the Moon’s south pole, the four-wheeled VIPER rover will prowl the eternal darkness of polar craters to locate water ice – a resource considered key for supporting human lunar bases. Because sunlight barely reaches the crater floors, VIPER is equipped with powerful headlights and will often operate in communication blackouts when Earth is below the horizon. Its onboard autonomy will allow it to map hazard-filled terrain and drill for samples without constant driving directions. In essence, VIPER is NASA’s robotic prospector, using AI to sniff out resources that the first Artemis astronauts (set to return to the Moon by 2025) might later mine for life support and fuel. “This is a major accomplishment… the rover is more than 80% built!” VIPER’s project manager Daniel Andrews reported in early 2024. The mission will be a test of whether our intelligent robots can prepare the Moon for longer human stays. If VIPER succeeds, it will become the first resource-mapping rover on another world, creating a lunar ice distribution atlas that informs the design of habitat systems and in-situ resource utilization plants.

Looking further ahead, space agencies are imagining robots as scouts, builders, and caretakers of extraterrestrial facilities. Consider the concept of a lunar base: astronauts may initially spend only days or weeks on the surface, but a cadre of robotic workers could remain active year-round. These automatons might erect habitats, deploy solar arrays, excavate regolith to bury modules (for radiation shielding), and stand guard doing maintenance between crewed visits. NASA has already invested in prototypes like RASSOR, a teleoperated rover with drum excavators designed to dig lunar soil for hours on end, and has funded companies to develop 3D printing tech for the Moon. In 2022, Texas-based ICON won a $57 million NASA contract to demonstrate additive manufacturing of a lunar habitat using robotic printers and local regolith as raw material. Such systems will lean heavily on AI to handle uneven terrain and adjust to material inconsistencies – tasks impossible to script line by line from Earth. “The Gateway [station] will seek to demonstrate an autonomy goal of 21 days without human intervention,” notes an operations concept from NASA, highlighting that robotics around the Moon must be able to run for long stretches completely on their own.

Mars, with its daunting distance and light-speed lag of 10–20 minutes, poses an even greater autonomy challenge. Engineers talk of sending robotic swarms to Mars ahead of a human landing – groups of construction rovers and flying scouts that could assemble a base camp, complete with power, life-support, and landing pads, before the first crewed spaceship descends. These robots would need an AI-driven “hive mind” to coordinate activities and adapt to surprises like dust storms or equipment failures. NASA’s Mars Sample Return plan, for instance, initially envisioned a Fetch Rover to retrieve sample tubes left by Perseverance; while that rover has been canceled in favor of using helicopters, the very proposal underscored NASA’s confidence in autonomous rendezvous and pickup operations on Mars. It’s a short conceptual leap from fetching sample tubes to fetching bricks or supplies to build a habitat. Indeed, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been experimenting with AI quadrotor drones and modified commercial robots (like Boston Dynamics’ Spot) in Mars-like desert environments, simulating how future robotic teammates might explore lava tubes or scout dangerous areas before humans risk entry.

International partners are equally engaged. The European Space Agency has floated the idea of a “Moon Village” – an international lunar base – where robots from different countries might work together. Already, ESA is contributing a robotic arm to NASA’s Artemis program and has plans for a large logistics lander (the EL3) to deliver cargo and probably robotic vehicles to the Moon’s surface later this decade. JAXA is teaming with Toyota to develop a pressurized rover (dubbed the Lunar Cruiser) which will have autonomous driving modes to ferry astronauts around, and after crew depart, could continue scientific traverses on autopilot. China has announced an ambitious roadmap with Russia to build an International Lunar Research Station in the 2030s, a base that would start with uncrewed landers and rovers laying infrastructure such as power and communication networks. To that end, China’s next lunar missions (Chang’e 7 and 8) will include multiple robots – a lander, a rover, a flying hopper – all coordinating to detect water and usable materials, practicing the art of multi-agent robotic cooperation on another world.

Back in low Earth orbit, the imminent retirement of the ISS and the rise of commercial space stations will further expand the domain for space robotics. Private outposts planned by companies like Axiom Space will likely employ robotic arms and free-flyers from day one, borrowing from decades of ISS experience. These stations could serve as testbeds for AI robotic systems that later head to Mars transit vehicles or deep-space gateways. Each mission, each new robot deployed, feeds data into the hungry machine-learning algorithms, making the next generation smarter.

A New Era of Human-Robot Collaboration in Space

As AI-driven robotics become integral to space exploration, the relationship between human explorers and their mechanical counterparts is entering a new era. Rather than tools controlled moment-to-moment by astronauts and engineers, robots are graduating into true partners – teammates that can analyze, decide, and act in the service of mission goals. “Instead of replacing human astronauts, AI is being developed to enhance human-robot collaboration in space missions,” as one eWEEK analysis put it, emphasizing that the goal is synergy, not competition. Astronauts on the Moon or Mars will lean on their robotic assistants for survival: trusting AI to drive uncrewed supply rovers across miles of alien desert to a base, or to run life-support systems diagnostics while they sleep. Mission controllers on Earth, for their part, will increasingly act as fleet managers for squads of intelligent robots, sending high-level objectives and receiving rich data, rather than joystick commands and raw telemetry.

Achieving this vision will require surmounting challenges. AI systems must be extraordinarily robust against radiation glitches and faults. Communication protocols and standards will be needed so that a rover from one space agency can talk to a lander or orbiter from another, forming an interoperable web of robotic explorers. Ethical and safety considerations also come to the forefront: we must ensure AI behaviors are transparent and fail-safe, especially when humans are nearby. Yet the momentum is undeniable. “We’re committing over $3.5 billion over the next decade to push advanced robotics for lunar and Martian missions,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson revealed in a recent briefing. “When we return to the Moon, we’ll do things differently – this time we go with our robot explorers.” The successes of AI-driven machines like Perseverance, Yutu-2, and MEV-1 have shown that robots can extend humanity’s reach where we cannot go ourselves (or at least not yet). They are our planetary geologists, our cosmic construction workers, our orbital mechanics. And thanks to artificial intelligence, they are becoming more self-reliant with each mission. It’s a future that feels closer than ever: one where a human crew sets foot on Mars and finds a thriving outpost built and tended by robotic hands; where orbital robots keep satellites and space stations humming as we live and work in space; where Earth and its Moon are connected by an armada of autonomous spacecraft ferrying data and goods. In this grand enterprise, AI is the quiet force empowering machines to shoulder the load alongside us. The age of AI-powered space robotics has dawned – and it promises to carry us farther, faster, and smarter into the final frontier.
