Forward Future Episode 16

Brin Returns to Google, Twitter Morphs into 'X', and Biological Computer Chips Begin to Learn!

Welcome to another astonishing week in the world of AI. From a familiar face heading back to Google to Twitter's unexpected rebranding, we've got plenty of exciting updates to share. Buckle up!

Google & AI Strategy

The week started with news of Sergey Brin, billionaire cofounder of Google, going back to work. Brin aims to develop 'Gemini,' Google’s answer to OpenAI’s GPT4, believing in the pivotal role generative AI plays not only in technology but also in human history. Despite his past skepticism towards AI, Brin's mindset has significantly shifted over the last five years. With his return, Google hopes to rekindle its energy and tackle the competitive AI landscape head-on.

Stability AI's Dominance

Stability AI's dual launches have been the talk of AI world. First, the introduction of their 'Free Willy' family of large language models - Free Willy 1 & 2 - (now renamed to Beluga) has set the AI world ablaze. With Free Willy 2, fine-tuned on the llama 2 model, it has taken the top spot on the open LLM leaderboards, even outpacing ChatGPT by some measures.

Next, they launched the highly anticipated stable diffusion XL 1.0 model (SDXL), an open-source generative Art model that rivals midjourney in terms of quality. With the emergence of such impressive open-source models, do you think paid services like midjourney should be worried?

Twitter or X?

In a surprising twist, Elon Musk has rebranded Twitter to 'X,' which seeks to be an all-encompassing app, similar to WeChat. Under Musk's leadership, X is striving to create a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities, powered by AI. It's a bold move, given the strong brand value 'Twitter' held.

OpenAI's Developments

ChatGPT has received a significant upgrade, allowing users to give it custom instructions for a specific personality and chat content. Even Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, is using the upgraded version!

OpenAI has also introduced Worldcoin, aiming to solve the identity problem by generating a unique 'proof of personhood' for each individual through a device called an 'Orb.' The project intends to pave the way for global democratic processes and potential AI-funded Universal Basic Income (UBI). But the question is, are you comfortable with sharing your biometric data for such a cause?

Runway ML's Gen2

Runway ML has pushed the boundaries yet again. Known for their highly impressive text-to-video product, they have now introduced a groundbreaking image-to-video feature, called Gen2. Check out examples here, and here, and here.

This innovative technology allows users to transform any static image into a dynamic, visually appealing video. Imagine a scenic landscape photograph suddenly coming to life, with trees rustling and a lake shimmering in the sunlight - that's the power Gen2 holds!

Using Gen2 is incredibly user-friendly. Simply upload any image onto the platform, and it will generate a stunning, high-quality video from that image. The technology it employs is not only highly advanced but also adapts to a wide range of imagery, making it versatile for different user needs.

The platform is publicly available, which means you can give it a try right away. Based on the reviews and user experiences so far, it promises not to disappoint.

If you've tried Gen2 or plan to, we'd love to hear about your experiences and how you've used this revolutionary technology!

Biological Computer Chips

Lastly, the military is funding a futuristic project: a semi-biological computer chip with built-in human and mouse brain cells. This development is set to fuse biological computing with artificial intelligence, and it's already showing signs of 'learning' - it picked up Pong in just five minutes! It's exciting yet slightly unsettling, isn't it?

All these advancements are underpinned by AI, indicating its pivotal role in shaping our future. Do you think we're steering towards a world of overabundance due to AI or potentially initiating our downfall?
