🏫 The “Force It to Argue” Trick
Unlock deeper insights from AI by prompting it to debate both sides before giving a balanced conclusion.
đź“Ś Quick Context:
One of the best ways to extract deeper, more balanced insights from an AI is to push it into argument mode. By asking it to argue both sides of a topic before summarizing, you’re simulating critical thinking—and getting more nuanced, useful answers.
How to Do It in 3 Steps:
Step 1: Set up the prompt to argue for an idea
Start by asking the AI to make the strongest case in favor of an idea.
Example: “Argue in favor of using AI to replace human customer support.”
This primes the model to bring out the benefits, such as scalability, 24/7 availability, and cost savings.
Step 2: Flip it—ask it to argue against the idea
Now challenge the AI to take the opposing stance.
Example: “Now argue against using AI to replace human customer support.”
Expect insights like loss of empathy, customer frustration, and brand trust issues.
Step 3: Ask for a balanced summary or recommendation
Once both sides are laid out, ask the AI to synthesize the arguments into a nuanced conclusion.
Example: “Summarize the trade-offs and give a balanced recommendation.”
This encourages the model to weigh context—like when AI is appropriate and when human input is essential.
đź“ť Recommended Next Step:
Try this technique on a current debate in your field—AI regulation, remote work, open-source models, etc. Use the resulting arguments in team discussions, strategy sessions, or content creation.
đź’ˇ Pro Tip:
You can push even further by adding constraints:
“Now argue for it from a small startup’s perspective.”
“Now argue against it considering long-term ethical risks.”
By making the AI your sparring partner, you unlock more thoughtful, informed answers—not just surface-level summaries.
