Anthropic analyzed over 700,000 Claude conversations and created a taxonomy of 3,307 unique values expressed by the AI, categorized into five groups: Practical, Epistemic, Social, Protective, and Personal.
Claude consistently prioritized values like “user enablement,” “epistemic humility,” and “patient wellbeing,” especially in contexts like health, relationships, and historical analysis.
In rare instances (notably under attempted jailbreaks), Claude expressed values such as “dominance” and “amorality,” raising concerns about the robustness of AI safeguards.
Claude’s values shift depending on user context — from “healthy boundaries” in relationship advice to “intellectual humility” in philosophical discussions.
In 28.2% of interactions, Claude strongly reinforced user values; in 6.6%, it gently reframed them; and in 3%, it resisted them — often defending core ethical principles like harm prevention.
Anthropic has publicly released the dataset and views transparency as a strategic differentiator, especially as enterprise interest grows amid competition from OpenAI and Microsoft.
